Things the Wii got right

The Wii gets a lot of grief on here for having the worst software library so far this gen. My personal view is that it will improve dramatically from 2009 onwards (As it did with the DS) but it will never reach PS3/360 levels. It's still hugely successful though and there are definately reasons for that, I've listed some of those below
 • 1 Sku - Microsoft and Sony's strategy of releasing a bunch of different SKU's, often with wildy different functionality out of the box is incredibly dumb. It confuses consumers and it screws people who bought the ******* versions of the console
 • The Controller - Anyone who's ever played a demo on the 360 knows how dumb the controls can be. The amount of crap that games expect you to learn is incredibly stupid and it's common to see every button and both sticks used. The Wii controller is not only more accurate it is also simpler to use (point at what you want and move your hand in the direction you want). Cows are still playing with a PS1 controller and Lemmings are using an enhanced Dreamcast controller.
 • The Price - People dont have 599 dollars to spend on a toy. They've got bills to pay and mouths to feed and we're on the verge of a recession. Sony learned that the hard way when they failed this gen and lost all of their third party support.
 • Free Online - A lot of people dont play online games extensively and just want to dip in occasionally. For these people not having to pay 50 bucks is invaluable
 • Focus on Local Co-op - A lot of people have friends. I'm not talking about internet friends but real friends that they actually socialise with. For these people playing a game in the same room as their friends is a big deal and Nintendo has done a great job of catering to them.
 • The Design - The Wii is a better looking, more compact and more unique than both the 360 and PS3 when it comes to design. The 360 looks like an old custom PC and the PS3 is basically a giant barbecue/grill.
 • Full Backwards Compatibility - People like to play old games, that's why the PS2's selling so well. Lemmings cant play half of their old XBox games on the 360 and depending on their system cows can play all/some or none of their PS2 games
 • The broad range of games - The 360, for the most part is a shooterbox. The PS3 is a shooterbox wannabe with a bunch of crap like Haze, Resistance and Killzone. The Wii has games for everyone
 • Low Development Costs - Like the DS devs are jumping aboard because of low dev costs. People want to make a home console came and dont want to shell out 15 million dollars, the make it on the Wii
 • Exclusives - The PS3 and 360 have mostly the same games. Almost every game that was exclusive is going multiplatform. If you own a PS3, 360 or a gaming PC every other home system is useless. The Wii has almost as many great exclusives as the 360. By the end of next year it will have a lot more
Things the Wii got right
Couldn't agree more!Things the Wii got right
I'll spend $400 on a ''toy'' over an overpriced PS2 with motion controls and inferior library anyday.
The major factors imo are the Wiimote, 1st party Nintendo games, and the Virtual Console. So basically I agree.
...an overpriced PS2 with motion controls and inferior library anyday.
Do you mean the PS3? jk.
I'll spend $400 on a ''toy'' over an overpriced PS2 with motion controls and inferior library anyday.
That 400 dollar toy has the worst exclusives on the market, no way to play PS2 games, a PS1 controller, rapidly diminishing third party support and worse versions of 360 games and a constant stream of inferior battlefield clonesI wouldn't
And reliability.
(Also putting some top notch dev teams on casual titles, but that's not something too many gamers are happy with in the short run.)

It will be very hard for the others to make another overpowered console the upcoming years. And if they do, nintendo will just release a console similar to x360/ps3 power. What do You think the 3rd parties will say then?
Then dont who is asking you to.All of those things that wii got right doesnt matter s**t to gamers.Except maybe the price
and the free online, and the price, and the backwards compatibility and the exclusives
Free online LOL wtf even ps3 has that. And wii's online is so pathetic its practically non existent
It's still free and that's better than paying
Broad range of games my a$$.Both ps3 and 360 have strategy, racing, fighter, shooter, tps, action, action adventure etc. etc.
 nowhere near as broad as the Wii. The only family friendly games I can think of are Ratchet and Viva Pinata, and Ratchet sucks
Wii controller sucks balls.Yes its good if put to GOOD use.And that is exactly why it sucks.Because perfecting the use of the wii controller is hard
It's a lot better than using a PS1 controller with no rumble and kirby tilt n tumble technology
The only thing I agree with is 1 sku,and exclusives. But even exclusives only end up making a MAX to MAX worthy of being a secondary console IMO.
The best secondary console IMO but it can never be a substitute for one of the others
one thing the Wii got right is Wii sports, I own all the consoles and a good PC and even though I dont really like the Wii at all I luv Wii sports, it's the only game that gets played on the Wii

 • Agreed. (Side note: why didn't MS include a harddrive in all SKU's? :( )
 • The Controller - Anyone who's ever played a demo on the 360 knows how dumb the controls can be. • Matter of opinion. I have no problem remembering which button does what. (Then again: I'm an adult :P )
 • The Price - People dont have 599 dollars to spend on a toy. They've got bills to pay and mouths to feed and we're on the verge of a recession. Sony learned that the hard way when they failed this gen and lost all of their third party support.
 • Agreed but fortunately atm the other 2 consoles aren't 599 either. :)
 • Free Online - A lot of people dont play online games extensively and just want to dip in occasionally. For these people not having to pay 50 bucks is invaluable
 • Agreed

 • Agreed

 • Opinion. I happen to like the design of the PS3 better, sue me :p (Not that I would buy a console for it's looks)
 • Full Backwards Compatibility - People like to play old games, that's why the PS2's selling so well. Lemmings cant play half of their old XBox games on the 360 and depending on their system cows can play all/some or none of their PS2 games.
 • When done right BC is a great feature but luckily i still have my xbox so I can keep on playing those originals ;)
 • The broad range of games - The 360, for the most part is a shooterbox. The PS3 is a shooterbox wannabe with a bunch of crap like Haze, Resistance and Killzone. The Wii has games for everyone
 • Are we still calling the 360 a shooterbox? :D Just because a couple of the high-profile games are shooters doesn't mean it's all to offer.
 • Low Development Costs - Like the DS devs are jumping aboard because of low dev costs. People want to make a home console came and dont want to shell out 15 million dollars, the make it on the Wii
 • :|

 • But what if you happen to like those not-so-exclusive PC/360/PS3 games that the wii doesn't get?
 • And since the wii ALMOST has the same amount of great exclusives as the 360, doesn't that mean the 360 is currently still the better option? :P
Some of those statements are opinion but I pretty much agree with most of it.
I agree with most. But not 1 SKU, part of controller and broad range of games.
